Audi R8 now has a larger engine variant using a V10 engine. This car has the same base engine of 5.2 L V10 Lamborghini Gallardo whose energy has been adjusted and decreased by 40 PS to 520 PS to comply with the class distinguishing Gallardo.

Audi R8 V8 Coupé 4.2 FSI Quattro, Audi R8 was originally equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 engine. Using Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI), and has an engine capacity of 4,163 cubic centimeters (254.0 cu in). It produces an output power of 420 metric horsepower (309 kW; 414 bhp) (Directive 80/1269 / EEC), and produces 430-newton meters (317 lbf · ft) of torque, at 98 RON 'Super Unleaded' gasoline. It is basically using the same engine used in the Audi B7 RS4 but is modified to use a dry sump lubrication system. V8 engine set back into a high-revving 4.2-liter V8 variants exist but includes a cylinder direct fuel injection (Fuel Stratified Injection), and four valves per cylinder, instead of five (as used in previous none-FSI variants). It also uses two chain-driven double overhead camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder bank and uses variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust camshafts. 4 wheel drive biased towards the rear, just send 30% of the power to the front wheels and the other 70% to the rear. The same transmission options with a Lamborghini-sourced six-speed manual gearbox with the metal gate for the shift lever, or the Audi-developed R Tronic gearbox which is semi-automatic, without a traditional clutch pedal with automatic gear shift mode. This option is the same as provided in the Lamborghini Gallardo. A clutch direct-shift gearbox double (DSG), now named by Audi as S Tronic.

Audi R8 V10 Audi AG launched on December 9, 2008. Using the 5.2-liter FSI engine, based on units of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, but re-tuned to produce a power output to 525 metric horsepower (386 kW; 518 bhp), and produces 530 newton meters (391 lbf · ft) of torque Compared to the V8 variant, the R8 V10's performance has been improved. Audi claims acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (0 to 62.1 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds, 60-124 miles per hour (97 to 200 km / h) in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 317 kilometers. Another change to the V10 version of the Audi R8 include some aesthetic differences: like all-LED headlamps, interior enhancements such as a 465-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the body aggressive body styling, larger rear brakes and roadwheels unique. It was initially thought that the R8 version will have the same engine as the Audi RS6 C6, a 5.0-liter TFSI twin-turbo V10, which produces 580 metric horsepower (427 kW; 572 bhp). However, some components of the twin-turbo system were too hot, and one prototype has been on fire at the Nürburgring. The model is displayed at the Show 2009 North American International Auto.
